Greenhous Wolverhampton HGV Technician Apprentice

In our latest Hous Proud, We chat to first year HGV Technician Jak Hewitt who talks about what it's like to be a HGV Technician apprentice at Greenhous Commercials and why you should consider a DAF apprenticeship to kickstart your career.
Introduce yourself!
Hi, my name is Jak Hewitt, I'm 16, and started my HGV Technician Apprenticeship in September, currently working in Greenhous DAF Wolverhampton PDI Centre.

Why did you choose an HGV Apprenticeship at Greenhous?
When I was younger, I’ve always loved messing and taking things apart and throughout school I wanted to involved in mechanics somehow once I had finished school. When I heard about the opportunity at Greenhous I thought this was the right path for me to start out on. Eventually I want to be a fully qualified technician and get my HGV license.

What are your main duties?
My main duties at the moment are carrying out PDI’s and RI’s – learning the basics around a truck ready for when I move into the workshop.

What is it like learning and studying away from home?
My apprenticeship allows me to earn money as well as learn which is always a bonus. I love the independence the apprenticeship brings me, especially when studying away from home at the DAF College in Bristol. The college part of my apprenticeship allows me to learn more in depth about my job.

How do you manage balancing the learning and working aspects of your apprenticeship?
Balancing the learning and working aspects of my apprenticeship isn’t too bad as my college time is split for two weeks at a time throughout the year – I’ve just had my first 2 weeks at college and I really enjoyed it. I can now take everything additional I have learnt and put it into practice in the workshop.

What's your favourite part about college?
Apart from the independence, my favourite part about college is learning about something I enjoy and want to get involved in. Its nice to be with people who are also in the same position as me.

What’s your favourite part of being an apprentice?
My favourite part about being an apprentice is the hands-on learning, I love the practical side of learning - getting involved in the maintenance of trucks.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learnt so far?
The most important thing I’ve learnt so far is how to PDI – this is the last top before a truck goes back out on the road so it’s crucial that the truck is fully working and ready to go.

What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship at Greenhous Group?
To anyone considering an apprenticeship at Greenhous I say go for it! It’s a great opportunity to enable you to start your learning process of trucks, there’s a lot to learn! Greenhous is a great company to work for and they really look after you. I get on well with the people I work with and that makes being an apprentice a little bit easier, especially when you’re new to it all.
