Tyre Safety Month at Greenhous

Book Your Free Tyre Check With Us

October is all about tyre safety and Greenhous are raising awareness about the important role that tyres play when on the road. Regular tyre maintenance is essential to ensure road safety, and there are three main points you need to check.

1) Air Pressure

Are your tyres looking a little deflated? Having inadequately inflated tyres can reduce on-the-road performance and your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Not only this, overinflated or underinflated tyres can affect steering, so having the correct tyre pressure is vital. To find the right pressure settings for your tyres, check out your vehicle’s handbook, or sometimes they are written on the inside panel of the driver’s side door. Regular checking of your air pressure allows you to spot any unexpected deflation that could increase the risk of an accident on the road.

2) Condition

Next, you need to keep an eye on your tyre’s condition - this involves closer inspection. You need to look for any cuts or splits, and also for any glass or any sharp materials that might have become stuck in the rubber, as this could cause a puncture. Make sure to keep an eye on your spare tyre too (if you have one), so when it may be needed you’re not let down.

3) Tread

Lastly, you need to look at tread depth. If your tread depth is level with the Indicators (the small raised rubber bars built into the main grooves of the tyre) it’s at its legal minimum depth and your tyre needs changing imminently. The legal tread depth minimum for cars, light vans and light trailers in the UK is 1.6mm - however we wouldn’t recommend you drive with your tyres at this depth and seek to replace your tyres at least 3mm. Tyre tread depth affects braking performance and distance, as tyres with adequate tread depth have better grip on the road and reduce the risk of accidents.
